WRITE OUT!
Sponsored by Pearson plc and in celebration of International Women's Month Precious Online Magazine and Network brings together some of the most exciting and innovative female voices in UK publishing.
Featuring authors Gemma Weekes, Caroline Bell Foster and Sophia Acheampong and chaired by the prolific Bernardine Evaristo, this is an opportunity to hear how Gemma and Caroline rose from the spark of an idea to getting published. All authors will also read extracts of their work.
We'll also hear from Rebecca Swift of The Literary Consultancy, which provides a specialist manuscript-reading service and mentoring for developing writers of fiction and poetry. Rebecca will reveal the process of getting your book from manuscript to print.
All this and a chance to network over a glass of wine and some nibbles.
Bernardine Evaristo
Bernardine Evaristo's books include Hello Mum, a short Quick Reads novel about teenage knife crime aimed at adult and teenage readers (Penguin March 2010); Lara, a verse novel about her family history (Bloodaxe 2009); Blonde Roots, a novel in which Africans enslave Europeans (Penguin 2008) Soul Tourists (Penguin 2005) and The Emperors Babe, about a black girl growing up in Roman London (Penguin 2001). She has taught creative writing worldwide and been on over 70 international writers tours. She has won several awards, is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Society of Arts, and received an MBE for services to literature in 2009. www.bevaristo.wordpress.com

Gemma Weekes
Gemma Weekes is a poet, singer and all-round scribbler who's debut novel, Love Me (Chatto & Windus, January 2009) has been greeted with rave reviews in the Guardian ('a delight'), the Telegraph ('hits you where you feel it most') and the Independent ('a wonderfully assured debut'). She's performed and devised pieces for venues all over the UK and abroad: including The Jazz Café, the Southbank Centre, Birmingham Rep, Stratford East Theatre, New Jersey Performing Arts Centre and in various television and radio appearances in Saint Lucia for Nobel Laureate Week. She also collaborated with Nitin Sawhney on a piece for BBC Radio 3’s ‘The Verb’ and has appeared in several anthologies and journals. She is working on her second novel.

Caroline Bell Foster
Caroline Bell Foster was born in England and at the age of 12 was taken on a six week holiday to Jamaica which lasted 18 years.
After leaving High School, Caroline lived in Canada and Kenya before returning to Jamaica and enrolling at The University of the West Indies to hone her writing skills.
In 2004 her first novel Ladies Jamaican was released. Caribbean Whisper's followed in 2009 and Saffron's Choice is scheduled for an October 2010 UK release.
Caroline has a huge Caribbean and North American fan base and since returning to England is gaining in popularity across Europe.
The author is married and has two children.
Sophia Acheampong
Sophia Acheampong began writing at university. She has an English degree and a Masters in Creative and Transactional Writing from Brunel University.
Her first novel, Growing Yams in London, was published in 2006 by Piccadilly Press. It was selected for the Arts Council’s Decibel promotion, Books for All, in 2007.
Sophia has participated in the Arts Council’s Young Cultural Creators scheme in 2008, where she worked with schools, libraries and museums, to inspire school children to be creative. She has also appeared on BBC’s Big Read, and on the BBC’s Asian Network.
Sophia’s second novel Ipods in Accra was also published by Piccadilly Press, in May 2009.

Rebecca Swift, The Literary Consultancy
Rebecca Swift worked at Virago Press where she first conceived of the idea for The Literary Consultancy (TLC)which she co-founded with Hannah Griffiths in 1996. She has appeared at numerous literary festivals representing TLC and exploring the relationship between writers and the publishing industry. In addition she has taught poetry and life writing.
Founded in 1996, The Literary Consultancy is recommended by The Arts Council England and major publishing houses, and holds a strong track record of helping writers get into print, including a successful mentoring scheme, Chapter & Verse. New writers are offered detailed critical assessments of their fiction, non fiction, autobiography, children’s books, film/TV/theatre/radio scripts, and poetry at all stages of development, and TLC has strong working connections with leading publishers and agents such as Curtis Brown, Penguin Books, Bloomsbury, Hodder Headline, Faber and Faber, Transita Press, Serpent’s Tail and many more.
Rebecca's poetry has been published in Virago New Poets, Vintage New Writing 6, and Driftwood; and she has written an opera libretto for Spirit Child, composed by Jenni Roditi, commissioned by the Lontano Ensemble and Arts Council. She has written and reviewed for the Independent and Guardian as well as edited Letters from Margaret, a volume of letters between Bernard Shaw and Margaret Wheeler and Imagining Characters, a book of conversations between A.S.Byatt and Igns Sodr, both for Chatto & Windus.
